Shubh Deepawali



Day 3 of the five day festivity is Deepawali. It is "The festival of Lights" and is a significant day. "Deep" means "light" and "avail" means "series". Thus, Deepavali means series of lights. The houses and business premises are already been cleaned up and decorated, to welcome Goddess Lakshmi. The festive spirituality signifies the victory of light over darkness. Diwali is the most awaited festival in Hinduism and so, it is celebrated with lots of joy and enthusiasm. Diwali also marks a major shopping period all over India as people starts exchanging gifts with family and friends. And, buy new things as their assets such as utensils, precious metals, home décor items etc.

An overview over preparations of Deepawali-

  • Draw small footprints using rice flour and vermilion powder. This indicates the awaiting of the arrival of Dhan Lakshmi.

  • Decorate the entrance way with traditional motifs of Rangoli design. You can find endless inspiring designs of rangoli over internet or also you can buy stencils for easy making rangoli ,from market. Just you need is to pour colors over the stencil. Make Om, mangal kalash, swastik, shree, lotus and other floral patterns. Remember, to search and purchase eco-friendly colors.

  • Wear traditional and cultural dresses and jewels on this day. Women can wear Sari / Salwar-kurta / Lehnga-choli and men can wear embroidered Kurta with Dhoti / Pajama / Pajami.

  • Flower garlands, Wall hangings, lights are used for decorations.

  • Buy some floating candles, and put them with flowers in a bowl partially filled with water.

  • You can go creative using handicrafts and paintings, this will give your home a fresh look.

  • Think for a color scheme for you home and purchase rich color and soft fabric bed sheets, cushions, curtains, rugs and other accessories in similar color tone.
     

  • Go for homemade Desi ghee sweets. You can search recipes for Indian sweets and Desserts.


  • Perform Ganesha and Lakshmi pujan and seek blessing from the divine. Maa Lakshmi is the goddess of Wealth. Recite Vedic mantras during puja. Offer grains, leaves, flowers, coins and sweets to the idol during lakshmi puja, conclude with Aarti.

  • Light lamps or "diyas" with candles in the evening. And turn all the lights on.


  • Firecrackers and Fireworks are main celebration part of the festival. But take care of kids and pets. Be careful and follow safety precautions.
